Unit One:  forming the organisation

ISBN 978-1-85450-304-6 by Myra Duffy and Sheila Ritchie

part of Managing a Small Organisation Full set of eight titles  ISBN 978-1-85450-354-1

Small or voluntary organisations are set up for a variety of purposes: to address a local need; to make a bid for funding; as the result of an award of funding, or as a way of developing a project when pump priming ends.  To be successful the organisation must have a clear sense of purpose and a clear sense of direction.

This unit addresses the issues involved in forming an organisation. It focuses on format, purpose and partnerships and looks to the future when initial funding may be ending and new ways of raising money must be found. An organisation which is clear about what it wants to do is in a much better position to continue after pump-priming funding ends.

The Unit comprises:

Book One: Theory and Exercises

1.       Designing an organisation: have you got what it takes? (effecting change, identifying your own skills, preparing the ground)

2.       What makes a good organisation? (identifying the core work in an organisation, key objectives and key tasks)

3.       Shaping the organisation (the constitution, developing a draft constitution)

4.       Funding the organisation (the status of the organisation, engaging funders, applying for funding)

5.       Making the organisation effective  (naming the organisation, organisational structures, publicising and marketing the organisation)

6.       The organisational culture (different models -their benefits and problems; building creativity)

7.       Planning for the future (future funding, future staffing, ensuring a flow of volunteers)

8.       End of Unit checklist

9.       An Organisational Template

Book Two: Answers to the Exercises and Five Minute prompts
