Unit Three:
coping with crises – the management of stress

set of eight titles ISBN 978-1-85450-354-1 |

Small organisations or units are very
vulnerable. Usually funded for a
specific purpose, they are often seen as an ‘add-on’ to the real business of
the Council or parent organisation. Many struggle to survive even during the
funding period. The priorities of funders can change within the lifetime of
the small organisation and it is not advisable to rely on one source of
funding. Equally complex is the organisation funded, perhaps by subscription,
from many partners. |
Not all problems are related to
funding and there are a variety of scenarios for which the manager must be
prepared. Chief among these are the various kinds of stress, which can result
from the uncertainties outlined above. |
It is vital to anticipate problems
that are likely to arise and to have strategies for dealing with them. This
unit highlights some potential crises and suggests coping strategies. |
The Unit comprises: |
Book One: Theory and Exercises |
1. Coping with
Crises: personal stress (identifying the nature of stress, understanding the
concept of stress, assessing your reactions to stress) |
2. Identifying
crisis (what is a crisis? problems versus crises, crises in small
organisations, anticipating a crisis) |
3. Beyond Survival
(managing a downturn, project management, keeping an overview) |
4. Problems? What
problems? (ways of identifying problems, group techniques for solving
problems, the 5-stage process) |
5. Crises and
Stress (organisational stress, productive versus non-productive stress,
finding the balance) |
6. Crises and
Conflict (healthy versus non-healthy conflict, conflict within and outside the
organisation, negotiating in conflict situations, conflict and volunteers) |
7. Managing stress
and conflict in your own organisation (ways in which the organisation can
recognise conflict, alleviating stress, practices to reduce stress, educating
to counter stress) |
8. End of Unit
