Unit Eight: training roles & responsibilities

ISBN 978-1-85450-339-8 by Myra Duffy and Sheila Ritchie

part of Managing a Small Organisation Full set of eight titles  ISBN 978-1-85450-354-1

Few managers or co-ordinators in small organisations or units, or in voluntary organisations, understand the role of a manager as trainer. Very few job descriptions for a co-ordinator or manager of such an organisation make reference to any training or development role. Yet this is one of the most important functions of any manager, though not necessarily in a formal sense.

This unit aims to make managers aware of the basic training functions they will carry out within the organisation, consciously or otherwise, and help them develop a more pro-active approach to the process.

In addition, it offers help in developing those skills which are part of the training process, such as making a presentation.

Book One: Theory and Exercises

1.      What is training? (focus of training within the organisation; the role of the manager; identifying and satisfying training needs)

2.      How people learn (learning theory; core staff versus volunteers; essential versus non-essential learning)

3.      Using learning opportunities (developing strategies for making use of, for example, meetings as learning opportunities; action learning)

4.      Formalising learning (effective layouts; mentoring; using the ‘core time’ model)

5.      Assessing effectiveness (formal versus informal assessment of learning; time constraints and other barriers)

6.      Developing a learning culture within the organisation(the role of the manager; mentoring opportunities; encouraging learning outside the organisation)

7.      Developing a training plan for the organisation(setting priorities; involving staff; involving volunteers; dealing with financial constraints)

8.      A training exercise for your own organisation

9.      End of unit checklist
