Evaluation of Training
elm-training was founded in 1981 and specialises in consultancy for organisations seeking to improve the performance of their staff, especially in personal and interpersonal skills. Typical interventions for companies have been in:-
* training in consultancy and advisory work
* training in negotiating skills - in both commercial and public sector organisations
* designing and implementing change management initiatives
* investigating motivation and performance management
* developing leadership and skills in group and team management
We aim to develop people to be self-motivated learners and managers. Our consultants and trainers are committed to the view that people learn best when they are comfortable, secure and feel able to experiment and to contribute without threat. For this reason we use methods high on participation from the learner and low on trainer dependence. We are careful to ensure that our materials are relevant and have validity to the organisation and to the circumstances of the particular group.
For this reason we have no open programmes with standard packages, but custom design all consultancy, interventions, training, follow up and advice.
elm-training has a sister company - elm publications, which publishes textbooks and training resources for business and management.

All courses and materials are designed to reflect the customer's special needs. We analyse workplace circumstances, organisational culture and relationships, looking at training needs and indicating if and how the skills required can be developed.
Sometimes the performance shortfall is not a training problem, but, for example, one of mismatched motivation. (In such a case we can offer advice on other means of solving the problem.)
Our methods are modern and well-tested: we feel that people respond and learn best in an atmosphere of openness and comfort where they can see the practical relevance, and practice the application of, a skill. For professional and managerial staff we ensure that their experience and knowledge is recognised and harnessed by providing opportunities for discussion and interaction with others. We help them to build on their strengths and to be aware of how their weaknesses can be minimised.
Our consultants are experienced business and organisational professionals. Their experience in various kinds of work and organisation and their expertise in training and development render them tactful when identifying problems and positive when identifying solutions.
We have good experience and understanding of the psychology of working behaviour, motivation and learning and always provide a supportive and appropriately structured setting which helps people to recognise, acknowledge and accept current behaviour and, usually, learn how to change it.
We do not "swap" consultants or trainers - the people you book and who visit you to discuss your needs, write the materials, perform the interventions and deliver any training. Substitutions occur rarely and with your full agreement.
WORK DONE
elm-training has done work in the following fields:-
General Management
People Management and Interpersonal Skills
Specialist subject training
elm-training has four direct employees providing IT and clerical support, administration and print and materials production, in addition to 10 consulting staff and associates. We have a range of equipment for printing, binding, media, materials and resources production, using the facilities of elm publications.
We require all our associates and employed staff not to use language (written or spoken) that is sexist, racist or denigratory of any social group and insist (and check) that their materials do not use racial, sexual or other stereotypes.
All our work is evaluated - from initial planning stage (we design appropriate measures and build these into our training programmes) to on-the-spot evaluation with forms for participants on training courses (we can design these for customers' special needs). Later by follow up to the client in whatever form is agreed. This can range from a simple exchange of views through to a full-scale, structured assessment, post-testing and on-the-job evaluation.
