Introduction by Richard Sharpley
This tutor's Pack contains a collection of in-class exercises, research exercises, assignments and essay titles, supported by SLIDES/OHPs, case studies and other materials, and is designed to be used by tutors in conjunction with the book Tourism, Tourists and Society. For ease of use, the exercises are laid out according to the book's chapter headings and each section is introduced by a brief summary of the relevant chapter. Additionally, further reading is suggested for each chapter. To derive most benefit from the materials and exercises, tutors should ensure that students have read the appropriate chapter or section as indicated prior to undertaking the exercises.
Each section of this Pack contains exercises and assignments that vary in length, content and complexity and which may be adapted according to the needs of different courses and student groups. The emphasis is on student participation and the development of both academic and practical skills, such as report writing, questionnaire design and making presentations. Owing to the nature of the subject, many exercises also involve class discussion and debate, the main purpose being to broaden students' consideration and understanding of the issues raised. Nevertheless, each section also includes suggested essay titles for a more formal, academic approach to assessment.
The exercises include:
- Informal class activities
- Role-play exercises
- Individual/group presentations
- Report/article writing
- Research activities
The sociological perspective adopted in Tourism, Tourists and Society is designed to encourage students to develop a broad-based approach to the study of tourism. The book provides the basis for a complete course, such as the Sociology and Anthropology of Tourism module taught at Luton, but it also develops many topics covered in more general tourism courses. The materials and exercises contained in this Pack are suggested means of supporting and generating such an approach; they may be used as presented here but, equally, it is hoped that tutors may adapt or augment the exercises with their own ideas and materials in order to suit different teaching and learning strategies, different levels and different student needs. Richard Sharpley, Northumbria University, October 2008
