Introduction to Tutors’ Pack

This edition of Travel and Tourism, Tutor’s Pack provides a comprehensive set of exercises and assignments and several useful case studies. It accompanies the textbook Travel and Tourism, fifth edition, 2005 and its material is updated where necessary.  It can be used with the textbook or on its own, most useful when not every student is able to get access to a copy of the book.

These exercises and case studies will help students studying for those exams where course work and assignments are a key part of the course, as well as building up portfolios of evidence to show their knowledge and understanding of the tourism industry.  The Pack has material suitable for students studying tourism at all levels, from those in the sixth-form to undergraduates taking the subject for the first time and, in particular, those on GNVQ intermediate and advanced and A level programmes.

Tutors are advised to read through an exercise before use to ensure that enough ancillary material is available in class sets. For example, Exercise 1a requires copies of The Times, The Independent, The Guardian and The Telegraph. Exercise 1d requires a selection of newspapers and magazines or, better still, the use of the library. Exercise 10a needs at least two sets of Tour Operators’ brochures (ideally contrasting in style and presentation).  Exercise 7c is helped by having copies of some advertisements for B&Bs.

Some exercises are for fieldwork, requiring students to go into their local community to research tourism topics. Extra time must be allowed for this as well as considerations of weather, the maturity of the group and proximity to suitable places. Otherwise, all the necessary material is supplied with this Pack.

The exercises are arranged in the same order as the chapters in the compatible textbook, Travel and Tourism.  Readings from the fifth edition (2005) of the textbook are given with each Exercise. Tutors may wish to use these exercises for in-course assignments. It is possible, by combining the exercises in this Pack with the Assignment at the end of each chapter in the textbook, to produce a complete set of assignments for the whole academic year.
